How to rank in ChatGPT
You don't rank in ChatGPT the way you rank in Google. ChatGPT doesn't return ten blue links - it writes an answer and cites a few sources it trusts. The job is to become one of those sources.
To get cited in ChatGPT: get indexed and performing in Bing (it powers ChatGPT's live search), write answer-first, extractable content, build brand mentions and entity authority across the web, add structured data, and earn a place in the Reddit threads, listicles and reviews ChatGPT already pulls from. Then measure whether you're actually being cited.
FirstReframe: citation, not ranking.
There's no position #1 in ChatGPT. When someone asks a question, the model composes a response and attributes some of it to sources. Either your brand is in that answer or it isn't. So the useful question isn't "how do I rank" - it's "how do I become a source ChatGPT trusts and quotes." Everything below serves that.
This is the core of what people now call answer engine optimization (AEO): optimizing to be the cited answer rather than the ranked link.
01Get indexed - and performing - in Bing.
ChatGPT's live web search runs on Bing, not Google. If Bing can't find you, ChatGPT often can't either. This is the most overlooked, highest-leverage step because most SEO teams have never touched Bing.
- Submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and confirm your key pages are indexed.
- Check how you actually rank in Bing for your target questions - it is not a copy of Google.
- Fix the basics Bing weights heavily: clean titles, exact-match relevance, crawlability.
02Write answer-first, extractable content.
Language models prefer content they can lift cleanly. Lead with the answer, then support it. On every page that targets a question:
- State the direct answer in the first 40-60 words, before any preamble.
- Use the real question as the heading (H2/H3), in natural language.
- Keep answers self-contained - a model should be able to quote one paragraph without needing the rest.
- Be specific and fact-dense: numbers, definitions, named steps. Vague marketing copy doesn't get cited.
If that structure feels familiar, it's the same discipline behind featured snippets - now with far higher stakes.
03Build brand mentions and entity authority.
ChatGPT leans on what the wider web says about you, not just what you say about yourself. Its picture of your brand is assembled from mentions across many sites. To strengthen it:
- Earn mentions on credible, topically relevant sites - digital PR, guest contributions, partnerships, being quoted.
- Keep your entity consistent: same name, description and details across your site, profiles and structured data.
- Publish original, citable material - data, research, clear definitions - that others reference.
Authority is the moat. It's slower than a quick fix, and it's exactly why one-off "rank in 24 hours" tricks don't hold.
04Get into the sources ChatGPT already cites.
Look at what ChatGPT actually quotes for your target prompts and you'll see the same source types repeatedly:
- Reddit - heavily cited across AI models. Genuine participation in the right subreddits matters.
- Listicles and roundups - "best X" and "top X agencies/tools" articles. Getting included is high leverage.
- Reviews and directories - third-party validation the model treats as evidence.
- YouTube and LinkedIn - increasingly pulled into answers.
Find the pages that already rank for your prompts, then work to be featured on them. You often win the citation by being on the source ChatGPT trusts, not just on your own site.
05Add structured data.
Schema makes your content machine-readable and easier to attribute. Prioritize:
- FAQ and HowTo - map directly to the question-answer shape of AI responses.
- Organization and Person - reinforce your entity and who's behind the content.
- Article with clear author and dates - signals freshness and provenance.
06Measure whether it's working.
You can't improve what you don't track. Don't guess - check:
- Ask your target prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and record whether you're cited.
- Track your share of AI voice against competitors over time.
- Watch referral traffic from AI tools and Bing organic as leading indicators.
Ranking in ChatGPT isn't a trick. It's authority, presence and extractability - the same fundamentals, pointed at the answer instead of the link.
The pointThis is just SEO, expanded.
None of this replaces search fundamentals - it extends them. The brands that get cited in ChatGPT are usually the ones already doing genuine, well-structured, authoritative work, then deliberately optimizing it for how answer engines read and attribute content. Do the fundamentals well, make your content easy to quote, and earn real authority. That's how you show up in the answer.
