What is generative engine optimization?

Mike Price·October 2026·6 min read

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting your brand quoted, summarised and cited inside the answers that AI engines generate - ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Copilot. Where traditional SEO wins a ranked link, GEO wins a place in the answer itself.

In one line

GEO is SEO for AI answers: instead of optimizing a page to rank and earn a click, you optimize your content and your wider web presence so generative AI systems treat you as a source worth citing. It builds on SEO fundamentals - it doesn't replace them.

The shiftWhy GEO exists.

For twenty years, search meant a list of links and the goal was to rank. Now a growing share of searches end inside an AI-generated answer: the model reads the web, synthesises a response, and names a few sources. The user often never clicks through.

That changes the target. If the answer is the destination, being on page one isn't enough - you have to be in the answer. GEO is the discipline that gets you there.

GEO, AEO, SEOHow the terms fit together.

The vocabulary in this space isn't perfectly consistent, but here's how the terms are generally used:

TermWhat it optimizes for
SEORanking a page and earning a click in traditional search results
AEOBeing the direct answer across AI engines and answer features like featured snippets
GEOBeing quoted and cited inside generative AI answers specifically

GEO and AEO overlap so much that I treat them as one connected practice rather than separate services. If you want the fuller comparison, I wrote about AEO vs SEO separately.

How it worksWhat generative engines actually reward.

Generative engines don't have a single ranking algorithm, but they share a pattern: they retrieve candidate sources from a search index, score those passages for relevance and trust, and quote the ones that answer the question most cleanly. That points to a handful of levers.

One thing worth knowing up front: each engine reads a different index. ChatGPT and Copilot use Bing, Gemini and Google AI Overviews use Google, Claude uses Brave, and Perplexity uses its own. So GEO starts with being visible in all of them - I covered this in ranking factors across the major AI engines.

How to do itThe GEO playbook.

  1. Be findable in the indexes. Confirm you're indexed and performing in Google, Bing and Brave - the engines can only cite what their search layer can retrieve.
  2. Write answer-first, extractable content. Lead with the direct answer in the first 40-60 words, use real questions as headings, and keep passages self-contained so a model can lift one cleanly.
  3. Publish original data. Proprietary research, benchmarks and concrete numbers get cited far more than generic opinion, because they give the model something only you can provide.
  4. Add structured data. FAQ, HowTo, Organization and Article schema help engines read, trust and attribute your content.
  5. Build entity authority and brand mentions. AI systems look for consensus across the web - mentions on reputable publications, review sites, directories and community platforms like Reddit all strengthen your case.
  6. Measure per engine. Track citations and share of AI voice across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews - they behave differently, so one score won't do.

GEO isn't a new set of tricks. It's good SEO, made extractable and backed by real authority, aimed at the answer instead of the link.

A cautionWhat GEO is not.

GEO is not a way to force your brand into an answer, and no one can guarantee a citation - these systems are probabilistic and change constantly. It's also not a replacement for SEO: the same crawlable, authoritative, well-structured foundation drives both. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed rankings or citations in ChatGPT.

The takeawayWhere to start.

If you already do SEO well, you're most of the way there. Make your best pages answer-first, add the structured data, publish something genuinely original, and get your index coverage sorted across Google, Bing and Brave. Then measure where you show up. That's GEO in practice.
